Trinity Mirror Solutions helps Sky1 launch new apocalypse series

Sky 1 began a disruptive print and online campaign with Trinity Mirror Solutions today to mark the start of its new show ‘You, Me and The Apocalypse’ – a bold, adrenaline-fuelled comedy drama about the last days of mankind.

To tease the storyline and drive viewers to episode one, Trinity Mirror Solutions’ Invention team worked with Sky’s media agency Mediacom to create a campaign that plays up the apocalyptic nature of the show and echoes Orson Welles’ iconic War of the Worlds radio broadcast.

Online and in print, the Mirror masthead sees the ‘O’ of Mirror replaced by a meteorite hurtling towards Earth and leaving a trail of scorch marks and smoke in its wake.

In a media first, the Mirror’s TV listings are completely wiped out from 9pm onwards, marking the time of transmission, with a message stating: “If the world ends tonight, so do the TV listings.”

In place of the regular horoscopes, Russell Grant has created apocalypse-themed stars, looking at what they might say if the end of the world was imminent. And popular cartoon strip Andy Capp adopts an end of the world storyline for the day.

A dedicated 8-page supplement introduces the Trinity Mirror audience to the finer details of the show, unveiling the characters, cast and crew alongside an interview with Rob Lowe, who plays a foul-mouthed rebel priest.

The print activity complements a digital solution that sees the Mirror website hit by interference caused by an incoming meteorite. The execution features a mock-eighties style computer code error, which reboots to reveal a trailer for the show.

Experience, the events activation team in Trinity Mirror Solutions, also took the end of world theme to Mediacom this morning by hosting a suitably apocalyptic take-over of the reception area where staff will be able to pose for their very own ‘Final Edition’ front page.

In addition to The Daily Mirror the campaign will run across The Daily Record, Manchester Evening News, Liverpool Echo, Newcastle Chronicle, Bristol Post and Nottingham Post.

Mark Field, Director of Invention at Trinity Mirror Solutions, said: “We had a lot of fun with this brief. An ‘end of the world’ theme gave us a lot of scope creatively and we also knew that our audience Modal Britain sees good TV as a social currency, something they need to know and talk about. It was important to create real talkability around the show.

“As a result we’ve done several things for the first time ever – the TV listings and horoscope will leave readers scratching their heads and eager to find out more about the show. By combining native content with ad space and some cracking original design work that resonates with our audience, we’ve been able to provide a truly bespoke, disruptive solution for Sky 1.”
